Full-time staff interpreter to provide interpreting services to HIS Sign customers in our service areas which includes Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and Washington, DC. The staff interpreter will be expected to provide services in a wide spectrum of settings including but not limited to medical facilities, government agencies, theatre, private and commercial business, conference, community and educational systems (secondary and post-secondary).


Core Job Functions


Provide interpreting service to consumers using Sign Language in a modality appropriate to


Provide close-vision and/or tactile interpreting services to low-vision and/or Deaf-Blind


Attend workshops, conferences to maintain certification and stay current with best practices

             and Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Attend department and company meetings as appropriate

Provide mentorship opportunities to entry-level interpreters as assigned

Contribute feedback to scheduling department regarding assignments to enhance level of


Communicate progress and problems to scheduling department promptly




Ability to work independently as well as team with other interpreters

Flexibility to provide services onsite as well as via our Video Remote Interpreting (VRI)


Availability to provide services for last minute assignments

Communication skills

Interpersonal skills with ability to interact with colleagues, customers and consumers with

             professionalism and integrity

Adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Professional Code of Conduct

Provide Mentorship opportunities

Support professional growth and development

Prompt response to schedule changes

Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving abilities


Skills & Qualifications


High School diploma or equivalent

Completion of an Interpreter Training Program or a minimum of three years of experience

Strong understanding of Deaf culture

Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language with excellent expressive and receptive


Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III or above, or Educational Interpreter

             Performance Assessment (EIPA) Level 3.5 or above

National Interpreter Certification (NIC) Written & Performance from Registry of Interpreters

             for the Deaf (RID) preferred but is not required

Successfully pass a national background check

Tuberculosis (TB) Test

Current Seasonal Flu Vaccine
