Sign Language Staff Interpreter

Summary

HIS Sign is looking for a full-time staff interpreter to support our growing needs in Virginia, D.C., Maryland, and West Virginia.  The staff interpreter will be responsible for providing services to a wide spectrum of settings such as medical, government and community interpreting with an emphasis on the K-12 setting including student, staff, and parent support

Core Job Functions

  • Provide interpreting service to consumers using Sign Language in a modality appropriate to consumer
  • Attend department and company meetings as appropriate
  • Communicate progress and problems to scheduling department promptly
  • Administrative duties assigned as needed
  • Other duties as needed

Expectations

  • Ability to work independently as well as team with other interpreters
  • Flexibility to provide services onsite as well as via our Virtual Interpreting Service (VIS)
  • Exceptional Communication skills
  • Reliable transportation
  • Good Interpersonal skills with ability to interact with colleagues, customers and consumers with professionalism and integrity
  • Adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Professional Code of Conduct
  • Stay in contact with Scheduling Department throughout the workday
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Attend workshops, conferences to maintain certification (if applicable) and stay current with best practices and Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Skills & Qualifications

  • Completion of an Interpreter Training Program or minimum of 3 years working experience
  • Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language with excellent expressive and receptive skills
  • Minimum Certification Requirements: Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III or above, or Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Level 3.5 or above
  • Must pass a national background check
  • Must pass a Tuberculosis (TB) Test
